Loss and damage: Nepal's request

On August 26, a glacial collapse triggered a massive flood in Nepal, affecting communities, infrastructure, and hydroelectric projects across the country. The event left hundreds dead and thousands missing, and prompted a large-scale search and recovery operation.

In response to this situation, Nepal requested assistance from the Fund for Loss and Damage Response (FRLD). Fundación Argentina 1.5 supports this request, understanding that the Fund was created to help address the losses and damages associated with the impacts of climate change faced by developing countries. The United Nations system itself has indicated that this disaster highlights the growing vulnerability of communities in the Hindu Kush Himalaya region to a changing climate.

The case of Nepal brings to the forefront once again a fundamental question: how can we ensure that loss and damage financing reaches the countries and communities that need it in a timely manner? This discussion is especially relevant for Latin America and the Caribbean, where climate impacts are also generating increasing losses and damages, while challenges to accessing international financing persist.

Strengthening the climate finance architecture means moving towards mechanisms capable of responding effectively, equitably, and promptly to these impacts. Nepal's request presents a new opportunity to discuss how to operationalize the international commitment to respond to loss and damage.
